Health officials in Washington say Cialis, sold under the brand name Viagra, may not be as effective against erectile dysfunction patients as it is for some men. And some doctors have warned patients against taking the drug on purpose, even though it's been prescribed for a long time."It's an awful habit to have to use to treat erectile dysfunction," said Dr. John V. Mabuchi, a urologist at Northwestern University. "If you take a daily pill that is taken as needed and you're experiencing erectile dysfunction, don't take it for the rest of your life."Mabuchi added that it's not uncommon for patients to take nitrates to lower blood pressure or to treat hypertension. "If you're taking any medication that contains nitrates, don't take it without asking your doctor for a prescription," he said. "There are a few things you can do to lower blood pressure with nitrates."In response to questions about the pill's effectiveness, doctors in the U. S. have said the drug can help men with the condition "even though they're not in the same sexual relationship as you."Mabuchi added that doctors have also noted that many patients who take nitrates have heart problems or high blood pressure and that they shouldn't take the drug if they're already taking other medications to treat it, such as blood pressure medication, diuretics or phenylpropanolamine.
A U. advisory panel recommended Thursday that doctors not prescribe Viagra for patients with heart problems to prevent a sudden drop in blood pressure.
But a study on its website showed the drug was not as effective against the condition in most patients. A similar study in the early 1990s found that people who were not taking nitrates for hypertension had a 50 percent higher risk of a heart attack than those who were taking nitrates. "This study is not showing a difference in a single study," the panel wrote. "In fact, the opposite is the case."
Some doctors have also cautioned that men who take nitrates for erectile dysfunction shouldn't be allowed to take the drug for life.
When a patient takes the drug in the first place, doctors are likely to have to take it "for life," said Dr. Edward K. Muehl, M. D., a urologist at the University of Pennsylvania. "If it's not effective in life, then the guy has to have surgery."
For Viagra, Dr. Muehl said that doctors have to follow a strict black box warning for Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs.
Viagra, the little blue pill, is available only on prescription. That means doctors aren't allowed to prescribe it without a prescription. But they can give patients the drug without having to see a doctor first.
